Tikanga Maori

Our Bicultural Heritage

At Holy Cross we cherish our bicultural heritage, encouraging all our students and staff to be active members of the unique culture of the tangata whenua of Aotearoa New Zealand. All students are taught Te Reo Maori and Tikanga Maori by our language specialist, Mrs Jenny Booth. Te Reo Maori is integrated into all school wide and class planning and programmes.

Kapa Haka

Our school Kapa Haka group  includes children from years 1-8 and is tutored by Mrs Booth and  past pupil Antonia Swann on Fridays. This enthusiastic group lead our school in powhiri for many occasions and perform in our cultural festival.

Te Hana-Reflective Teachers Tool

The Ministry of Education requires all teachers to be reflective in their practice in particular to developing teaching strategies that promote learning and engagement for maori learners. Maori learners are identified and tracked to ensure their needs are met across the different learning areas. As a school we have devised our own reflective teachers tool, Te Hana, which aims to support teachers in their planning and practice for all students regardless of ability, ethnicity, race or gender.
